UN: Need of Anti-Seismic Building in Italy

United Nations, Apr 6 (Prensa Latina) The UN Agency in charge of implementing the International Strategy for Disasters Reduction, UN/ISDR indicated the 6.3-degree earthquake that rocked the Italian central region alerts us on the need of anti-seismic building to withstand the vibrations of seismic activity.

During declarations after the earthquake took place in the medieval Italian city of L´Aquila, UN/ISDR reaffirmed the need of anti-seismic building techniques, to prevent deaths and material damages.

The intensity of the 6.3-degree earthquake is comparable to the one on May 2006 in the Indonesian island of Java, which killed more than 5,000 people.

The UN Agency indicated all the new public buildings, schools, hospitals and factories must be rebuilt with an anti-earthquake structure in all areas that are prone to seismic activity.

It also added the investment cost of that technology is minimal if compared to the expenses for recovery actions after the disaster, and it is hardly noticeable since it is mainly aimed at preserving lives.
